IRS Changes HSA Thresholds for 2010

In late May, the IRS adjusted three major thresholds for 2010 related to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). These cost-of-living adjustments are contained in Revenue Procedure 2009-29.
The new 2010 levels are as follows:
- Annual Contribution Levels for HSAs. Maximum annual HSA contributions for self-only HDHP coverage increases from $3,000 to $3,050. Maximum annual HSA contributions for family HDHP coverage increases from $5,950 to $6,150.
- Amounts for Annual Out-of-pocket Spending Maximums on HSA-Compatible HDHPs. Self-only coverage increases from $5,800 to $5,950. Family coverage increases from $11,600 to $11,900.
- Annual Minimum Deductible Amounts for HSA-Compatible HDHPs. Self-only increases from $1,150 to $1,200. Family coverage increases from $2,300 to $2,400
- Catch-up contributions. For individuals age 55 or older, these additional contributions remain at $1,000 for 2010 and subsequent years.
