Payroll compliance involves many interrelated legal topics, from wage & hour law, to taxation, to FMLA, and garnishments.  This seminar educates employers on their compliance requirements and points out gray areas and pitfalls that should be avoided.

Attendees will learn to distinguish common law employees from true independent contractors; how to properly classify occupations as exempt from overtime; how to calculate overtime with the true regular rate.   They'll learn what hours are compensable hours, and which are not.  Calculations will show how to determine exempt amounts of wages for IRS tax levies, various wage orders, and garnishments.  Easy-to-follow sample calculations show you how to check if you and your payroll company calculate correctly.  Plug your numbers into the sample calculation and see how 5-minute daily overtime mistake results in a six-figure claim for back wages.

Each attendee will receive a seminar manual with all the sample calculations discussed during the day, The appendices at the back of the manual provide immediate references to regulations, factsheets, and research web sites, so you'll want to keep it within easy reach, every day.

It only takes one disgruntled employee to file a complaint or a lawsuit for back wages that could turn into a million dollar liability.  Don't wait for the DOL or the federal courts to determine your liability.  Perform your own internal payroll compliance audit.  Attend this seminar to make sure you are fully informed!

Topics include:

  • Legal paycheck deductions
  • Wage and hour law relation to FMLA
  • Independent contractor vs. common law employee
  • Handling multiple garnishments
  • Employment tax withholding
  • Recordkeeping requirements
  • Bonus Chapter:  tips for a successful DOL audit
